Job 5

“Call if you will, but who will answer you?
    To which of the holy ones will you turn?

    Кого из ангелов позовёшь на помощь?

Resentment kills a fool,
    and envy slays the simple.

Гнев погубит глупого,
    а зависть убьёт простака.

I myself have seen a fool taking root,
    but suddenly his house was cursed.

Я видел сам, как глупец укоренился,
    но нежданно его дом был проклят.

His children are far from safety,
    crushed in court without a defender.

Его дети далеки от безопасности,
    их бьют в суде, но некому заступиться за них.

The hungry consume his harvest,
    taking it even from among thorns,
    and the thirsty pant after his wealth.

Голодный ест его урожай
    и даже то, что растёт среди тёрна,
    а жаждущий уносит его добро.

For hardship does not spring from the soil,
    nor does trouble sprout from the ground.

Беда не появляется из земли,
    и несчастье не вырастает на поле,

Yet man is born to trouble
    as surely as sparks fly upward.

но человек рождён для несчастий,
    как искры – чтобы улетать ввысь.

“But if I were you, I would appeal to God;
    I would lay my cause before him.

Но я бы воззвал к Аллаху,
    Ему бы доверил своё дело.

He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,
    miracles that cannot be counted.

Он творит великое и непостижимое,
    бессчётные чудеса.

He provides rain for the earth;
    he sends water on the countryside.

Он посылает на землю дождь
    и орошает поля.

The lowly he sets on high,
    and those who mourn are lifted to safety.

Он возвышает униженных,
    и возносятся плачущие к спасению.

He thwarts the plans of the crafty,
    so that their hands achieve no success.

Он разрушает замыслы хитрецов,
    чтобы не было успеха их рукам.

He catches the wise in their craftiness,
    and the schemes of the wily are swept away.

Он ловит мудрых на их же хитрость,
    и замыслы коварных рушатся.

Darkness comes upon them in the daytime;
    at noon they grope as in the night.

В дневное время мрак покрывает их,
    и в полдень они идут, как ночью, наощупь.

He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth;
    he saves them from the clutches of the powerful.

Он спасает бедного от их клеветы,
    спасает его от руки могучих.

So the poor have hope,
    and injustice shuts its mouth.

Итак, есть надежда у нищего,
    и неправда сомкнёт уста свои.

“Blessed is the one whom God corrects;
    so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.^[a]

Благословен тот, кого Аллах вразумляет;
    поэтому не презирай наставления Всемогущего.

For he wounds, but he also binds up;
    he injures, but his hands also heal.

Он ранит, но Сам перевязывает;
    Он поражает, но Его же рука исцеляет.

From six calamities he will rescue you;
    in seven no harm will touch you.

От шести несчастий тебя избавит,
    и седьмая беда тебя не коснётся.

In famine he will deliver you from death,
    and in battle from the stroke of the sword.

В голод избавит тебя от смерти,
    в сражении – от удара меча.

You will be protected from the lash of the tongue,
    and need not fear when destruction comes.

Ты будешь укрыт от злословия,
    и не будешь бояться прихода беды.

You will laugh at destruction and famine,
    and need not fear the wild animals.

Над бедой и голодом посмеёшься,
    и не будешь бояться диких зверей.

For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field,
    and the wild animals will be at peace with you.

Ты будешь в союзе с камнями на поле,^[a]
    и полевые звери будут в мире с тобой.

You will know that your tent is secure;
    you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing.

Ты узнаешь, что шатёр твой в безопасности,
    осмотришь владения свои – ничего не пропало.

You will know that your children will be many,
    and your descendants like the grass of the earth.

Ты узнаешь, что твоё потомство многочисленно,
    и потомков твоих, что травы на земле.

You will come to the grave in full vigor,
    like sheaves gathered in season.

Ты сойдёшь в могилу в полноте лет,
    словно сноп, уложенный в своё время.

“We have examined this, and it is true.
    So hear it and apply it to yourself.”
