Verse 1

After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.

После этого Аюб заговорил и проклял день, когда он появился на свет.

Verse 2

He said:

Verse 3

“May the day of my birth perish,
and the night that said, ‘A boy is conceived!’

– Пусть сгинет день, когда я родился,
и ночь, когда сказали: «Ребёнок зачат!»

Verse 4

That day—may it turn to darkness;
may God above not care about it;
may no light shine on it.

Пусть тот день станет тьмой;
пусть Аллах^[a] не вспомнит о нём,
и пусть свет в тот день не сияет.

Verse 5

May gloom and utter darkness claim it once more;
may a cloud settle over it;
may blackness overwhelm it.

Пусть он достанется мраку и мгле;
пусть будет затянут тучей,
пусть тьма его свет затмит.

Verse 6

That night—may thick darkness seize it;
may it not be included among the days of the year
nor be entered in any of the months.

Пусть той ночью владеет тьма;
пусть не сочтётся она в днях года
и не войдёт ни в один из месяцев.

Verse 7

May that night be barren;
may no shout of joy be heard in it.

Пусть та ночь будет бесплодной,
и не раздастся в ней крик радости.

Verse 8

May those who curse days^[a] curse that day,
those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.

Пусть чародеи проклянут её, как проклинают дни^[b],
пусть они разбудят левиафана^[c].

Verse 9

May its morning stars become dark;
may it wait for daylight in vain
and not see the first rays of dawn,

Пусть померкнут звёзды на её заре;
пусть ждёт она утра и не дождётся,
не увидит первых лучей рассвета

Verse 10

for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me
to hide trouble from my eyes.

за то, что допустила моё зачатие
и не скрыла от моих глаз горе.

Verse 11

“Why did I not perish at birth,
and die as I came from the womb?

Почему не погиб я при родах
и не умер сразу же после рождения?

Verse 12

Why were there knees to receive me
and breasts that I might be nursed?

Зачем меня держали на коленях^[d]
и вскармливали грудью?

Verse 13

For now I would be lying down in peace;
I would be asleep and at rest

Я лежал бы сейчас в мире,
спал бы себе спокойно,

Verse 14

with kings and rulers of the earth,
who built for themselves places now lying in ruins,

среди царей и мудрецов земли,
которые строили себе то, что ныне в руинах,

Verse 15

with princes who had gold,
who filled their houses with silver.

среди правителей, у которых было золото
и которые свои дома наполнили серебром.

Verse 16

Or why was I not hidden away in the ground like a stillborn child,
like an infant who never saw the light of day?

Почему не зарыли меня как мертворождённого,
как младенца, который не увидел света?

Verse 17

There the wicked cease from turmoil,
and there the weary are at rest.

Там прекращается суета неправедных,
и утомлённые находят покой.

Verse 18

Captives also enjoy their ease;
they no longer hear the slave driver’s shout.

Там отдыхают вместе пленники
и не слышат криков смотрителя.

Verse 19

The small and the great are there,
and the slaves are freed from their owners.

Там и малый, и великий равны,
и раб свободен перед господином.

Verse 20

“Why is light given to those in misery,
and life to the bitter of soul,

На что дан страдальцу свет,
и жизнь – тому, чья душа скорбит,

Verse 21

to those who long for death that does not come,
who search for it more than for hidden treasure,

тому, кто ждёт смерти, но она не идёт,
даже если он ищет её усердней, чем клад,

Verse 22

who are filled with gladness
and rejoice when they reach the grave?

тому, кто с радостью и ликованием
обрёл бы могилу?

Verse 23

Why is life given to a man
whose way is hidden,
whom God has hedged in?

Зачем дана жизнь тому, чей путь сокрыт,
тому, перед кем поставил преграду Аллах?

Verse 24

For sighing has become my daily food;
my groans pour out like water.

Вздохи мои вместо еды;
льются стоны мои, как вода.

Verse 25

What I feared has come upon me;
what I dreaded has happened to me.

Чего я боялся, то и произошло;
чего страшился, то со мной и случилось.

Verse 26

I have no peace, no quietness;
I have no rest, but only turmoil.”

Нет мне ни мира, ни покоя;
нет мне отдыха, настала смута.
