Job 20

“My troubled thoughts prompt me to answer
    because I am greatly disturbed.

– Заставляют меня ответить мои тревожные мысли,
    потому что я объят смятением.

I hear a rebuke that dishonors me,
    and my understanding inspires me to reply.

Я слышу упрёк, который позорит меня,
    и мой ум побуждает меня ответить.

“Surely you know how it has been from of old,
    ever since mankind^[a] was placed on the earth,

Разве ты не знаешь, как было издревле,
    с тех пор, как человек был поселён на земле:

that the mirth of the wicked is brief,
    the joy of the godless lasts but a moment.

кратковременно веселье нечестивцев,
    и радость безбожников длится лишь миг?

Though the pride of the godless person reaches to the heavens
    and his head touches the clouds,

Пусть его гордыня достигает небес,
    а голова касается облаков,

he will perish forever, like his own dung;
    those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’

он сгинет навек, как его же нечистоты,
    и спросят видевшие его: «Где он?»

Like a dream he flies away, no more to be found,
    banished like a vision of the night.

Как сон улетит он, и его не найти,
    как ночное видение пропадёт.

The eye that saw him will not see him again;
    his place will look on him no more.

Глаз, что видел его, впредь не увидит;
    его семья на него не посмотрит.

His children must make amends to the poor;
    his own hands must give back his wealth.

Его дети будут заискивать перед нищими,
    сами отдадут всё, что он похитил.

The youthful vigor that fills his bones
    will lie with him in the dust.

Молодецкая сила, что наполняет его тело,
    вместе с ним ляжет в прах.

“Though evil is sweet in his mouth
    and he hides it under his tongue,

Если его устам сладко зло,
    и он под языком его скрывает,

though he cannot bear to let it go
    and lets it linger in his mouth,

если он бережёт его и не отпускает,
    держит его во рту,

yet his food will turn sour in his stomach;
    it will become the venom of serpents within him.

то обернётся пища
    ядом змеиным в его желудке.

He will spit out the riches he swallowed;
    God will make his stomach vomit them up.

Он отрыгнёт богатства, которые проглотил;
    Аллах исторгнет их из его желудка.

He will suck the poison of serpents;
    the fangs of an adder will kill him.

Он будет сосать змеиный яд,
    жало гадюки его убьёт.

He will not enjoy the streams,
    the rivers flowing with honey and cream.

Не наслаждаться ему потоками,
    реками, текущими молоком и мёдом.

What he toiled for he must give back uneaten;
    he will not enjoy the profit from his trading.

Он вернёт нажитое, не отведав;
    своим доходам от торговли не порадуется.

For he has oppressed the poor and left them destitute;
    he has seized houses he did not build.

Теснил он бедных и пренебрегал ими;
    захватывал дома, которые не строил.

“Surely he will have no respite from his craving;
    he cannot save himself by his treasure.

Его желудок ненасытен;
    его жадность ничего не пропустит.

Nothing is left for him to devour;
    his prosperity will not endure.

Ничто не спаслось от его обжорства,
    поэтому благополучие его не удержится.

In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him;
    the full force of misery will come upon him.

Среди достатка его настигнет беда;
    все руки обиженных поднимутся на него.

When he has filled his belly,
    God will vent his burning anger against him
    and rain down his blows on him.

Когда он свой живот набьёт до отказа,
    Аллах пошлёт на него Свой пылающий гнев,
    прольёт дождём на его плоть.

Though he flees from an iron weapon,
    a bronze-tipped arrow pierces him.

Он убежит от железного оружия,
    но его пронзит бронзовая стрела.

He pulls it out of his back,
    the gleaming point out of his liver.
Terrors will come over him;

Стрела войдёт в его спину
    и пройдёт, сверкая, сквозь его печень.
Двинутся ужасы на него;

    total darkness lies in wait for his treasures.
A fire unfanned will consume him
    and devour what is left in his tent.

    кромешная тьма ожидает его сокровища.
Пожрёт его никем не зажжённый огонь
    и сожжёт последнее, что осталось в его шатре.

The heavens will expose his guilt;
    the earth will rise up against him.

Его вину небеса откроют,
    и восстанет против него земля.

A flood will carry off his house,
    rushing waters^[b] on the day of God’s wrath.

Богатство его дома расточится,
    в день гнева Аллаха расплещется, как вода.

Such is the fate God allots the wicked,
    the heritage appointed for them by God.”
