Job 14

“Mortals, born of woman,
    are of few days and full of trouble.

У рождённого женщиной человека
    короток век, но полон скорбями.

They spring up like flowers and wither away;
    like fleeting shadows, they do not endure.

Он, как цветок, прорастает и вянет,
    ускользает, как тень, не задерживается.

Do you fix your eye on them?
    Will you bring them^[a] before you for judgment?

И на нём задержал Ты взгляд?
    И его^[a] Ты на суд ведёшь?

Who can bring what is pure from the impure?
    No one!

Ты знаешь, что он нечист,
    зачем же ожидаешь от него чистоты?^[b]

A person’s days are determined;
    you have decreed the number of his months
    and have set limits he cannot exceed.

Если дни его установлены,
    и число его месяцев Ты сосчитал,
    и поставил рубеж, который он не преступит,

So look away from him and let him alone,
    till he has put in his time like a hired laborer.

то отведи от него Свой взгляд, оставь его в покое;
    пусть он, как батрак, порадуется своим дням.

“At least there is hope for a tree:
    If it is cut down, it will sprout again,
    and its new shoots will not fail.

Ведь и для дерева есть надежда:
    если срубят его, оно оживёт
    и снова пустит побеги.

Its roots may grow old in the ground
    and its stump die in the soil,

Пусть корни его одряхлели в земле,
    и пень омертвел в пыли,

yet at the scent of water it will bud
    and put forth shoots like a plant.

чуть почует воду – расцветёт
    и пустит ветви, как молодое растение.

But a man dies and is laid low;
    he breathes his last and is no more.

А человек умрёт и исчезнет,
    испустит дух, и где он?

As the water of a lake dries up
    or a riverbed becomes parched and dry,

Как исчезает вода из озера,
    как иссякает река и сохнет,

so he lies down and does not rise;
    till the heavens are no more, people will not awake
    or be roused from their sleep.

так и смертный ляжет и не поднимется;
    пока не исчезнут небеса, он не проснётся
    и от сна своего не встанет.

“If only you would hide me in the grave
    and conceal me till your anger has passed!
If only you would set me a time
    and then remember me!

О, если бы Ты укрыл меня в мире мёртвых,
    спрятал меня, пока не пройдёт Твой гнев!
О, если бы Ты установил мне срок,
    а потом вспомнил бы обо мне!

If someone dies, will they live again?
    All the days of my hard service
    I will wait for my renewal^[b] to come.

Когда человек умрёт, будет ли он жить вновь?
    Все дни моей службы^[c] я бы ждал,
    когда придёт моё избавление.

You will call and I will answer you;
    you will long for the creature your hands have made.

Ты бы позвал, и я бы ответил;
    творение Твоих рук растрогало бы Тебя.

Surely then you will count my steps
    but not keep track of my sin.

Тогда Ты считал бы мои шаги,
    но мои грехи не выискивал бы.

My offenses will be sealed up in a bag;
    you will cover over my sin.

Накрепко запечатана была бы моя вина,
    Ты сокрыл бы мои проступки.

“But as a mountain erodes and crumbles
    and as a rock is moved from its place,

Но как гора рушится и дробится,
    и как скала сходит со своего места,

as water wears away stones
    and torrents wash away the soil,
    so you destroy a person’s hope.

как вода подтачивает камни,
    и потоки смывают почву,
    так и Ты губишь надежды смертного.

You overpower them once for all, and they are gone;
    you change their countenance and send them away.

Ты теснишь его до конца, и он уходит;
    Ты искажаешь его лицо и отсылаешь его.

If their children are honored, they do not know it;
    if their offspring are brought low, they do not see it.

В чести ли дети его, он не знает;
    обижают ли их, он не видит.

They feel but the pain of their own bodies
    and mourn only for themselves.”
