Job 11

“Are all these words to go unanswered?
    Is this talker to be vindicated?

– Остаться ли множеству слов без ответа?
    Должен ли краснобай быть оправданным?

Will your idle talk reduce others to silence?
    Will no one rebuke you when you mock?

Разве болтовня твоя заставит людей замолчать?
    Неужели не посрамят тебя, когда ты глумишься?

You say to God, ‘My beliefs are flawless
    and I am pure in your sight.’

Ты говоришь: «Учение моё верно,
    и чист я в глазах Аллаха».

Oh, how I wish that God would speak,
    that he would open his lips against you

О, если бы Аллах ответил,
    стал бы говорить против тебя

and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom,
    for true wisdom has two sides.
    Know this: God has even forgotten some of your sin.

и сокровенную мудрость тебе открыл,
    ведь тебе ведома только одна её сторона^[a].
Знай же, что часть твоих грехов
    Аллах предал забвению.

“Can you fathom the mysteries of God?
    Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?

Можешь ли ты постигнуть Аллаха,
    постичь пределы Всемогущего?

They are higher than the heavens above—what can you do?
    They are deeper than the depths below—what can you know?

Они выше небес – что ты сможешь сделать?
    Глубже мира мёртвых – что ты сможешь узнать?

Their measure is longer than the earth
    and wider than the sea.

Их мера длиннее земли,
    шире моря.

“If he comes along and confines you in prison
    and convenes a court, who can oppose him?

Если придёт Он, бросит в темницу
    и созовёт суд – кто Ему помешает?

Surely he recognizes deceivers;
    and when he sees evil, does he not take note?

Ведь Ему известно кто лжив;
    Он видит зло – неужели оставит его без внимания?

But the witless can no more become wise
    than a wild donkey’s colt can be born human.^[a]

Но глупец наберётся ума лишь тогда,
    когда дикий осёл переродится в человека^[b].

“Yet if you devote your heart to him
    and stretch out your hands to him,

Но если ты сердце Ему отдашь
    и руки к Нему прострёшь,

if you put away the sin that is in your hand
    and allow no evil to dwell in your tent,

если грех, что в руке у тебя, отбросишь
    и прогонишь порок из своих шатров,

then, free of fault, you will lift up your face;
    you will stand firm and without fear.

то поднимешь лицо своё без стыда,
    встанешь прямо и не будешь бояться.

You will surely forget your trouble,
    recalling it only as waters gone by.

Тогда ты забудешь своё несчастье,
    будешь помнить о нём, как об утёкшей воде.

Life will be brighter than noonday,
    and darkness will become like morning.

Жизнь твоя станет яснее полдня,
    а тьму рассеет заря.

You will be secure, because there is hope;
    you will look about you and take your rest in safety.

Ты будешь спокоен, ведь есть надежда;
    окинешь вокруг взглядом и будешь спать безопасно.

You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid,
    and many will court your favor.

Ляжешь, и никто тебя не устрашит,
    и многие будут заискивать перед тобой.

But the eyes of the wicked will fail,
    and escape will elude them;
    their hope will become a dying gasp.”
