Genesis 38

At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah.

There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and made love to her;

Там Иуда встретил дочь хананея, которого звали Шуа. Он женился на ней и стал с ней жить;

she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er.

она забеременела и родила сына, которого назвали Ир.

She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan.

Она вновь забеременела и родила сына, и назвала его Онан.

She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.

Она родила ещё одного сына и назвала его Шела. Она родила его в Хезиве^[a].

Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

Иуда взял для своего первенца Ира жену по имени Фамарь.

But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.

Но Ир, первенец Иуды, был грешен в глазах Вечного, и Вечный предал его смерти.

Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.”

Тогда Иуда сказал Онану:

– Ты должен лечь с женой брата и исполнить долг деверя: произвести потомство для брата^[b].

But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother.

Но Онан знал, что потомство будет не его, и поэтому всякий раз, ложась с женой брата, он изливал семя на землю, чтобы не произвести потомства для брата.

What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also.

То, что он делал, было грешно в глазах Вечного, поэтому Он предал смерти и Онана.

Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s household until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, just like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s household.

Тогда Иуда сказал своей невестке Фамари:

– Живи вдовой в доме у твоего отца, пока не вырастет мой сын Шела, – потому что он подумал: «Как бы и Шела не умер вслед за братьями».

И Фамарь отправилась жить в дом отца.

After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.

Много времени спустя жена Иуды, дочь Шуа, умерла. Когда Иуда утешился по ней, он пошёл в Тимну, к людям, которые стригли его овец, и его друг адулламитянин Хира пошёл с ним.

When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,”

Фамари сказали:

she took off her widow’s clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.

Она сняла вдовьи одежды, покрылась накидкой, чтобы её не узнали, и села у входа в Енаим, который на дороге в Тимну, потому что она видела, что хотя Шела уже вырос, её не отдали ему в жёны.

When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

Когда Иуда увидел Фамарь, он принял её за блудницу, потому что у неё было закрыто лицо.

Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”

“And what will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked.

Он свернул с дороги к ней и сказал:

– Пойдём, я хочу лечь с тобой, – ведь он не знал, что это его невестка.

Она спросила:

– А что ты дашь мне за то, чтобы лечь со мной?

“I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” he said.

“Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?” she asked.

Он ответил:

– Я пошлю тебе козлёнка из моего стада.

Она спросила:

– А ты дашь мне залог до тех пор, пока не пришлёшь козлёнка?

He said, “What pledge should I give you?”

“Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand,” she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

Он сказал:

– Какой залог тебе дать?

Она ответила:

– Твою печать на шнурке и посох, который у тебя в руке.

Он дал ей всё это и переспал с ней, и она забеременела от него.

After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow’s clothes again.

Уйдя оттуда, она сняла своё покрывало и вновь надела вдовьи одежды.

Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her.

Тем временем Иуда послал через своего друга, адулламитянина, козлёнка, чтобы получить назад залог у той женщины, но друг не нашёл её.

He asked the men who lived there, “Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?”

“There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here,” they said.

Он спросил у местных жителей:

– Где та храмовая блудница^[c], которая сидела у дороги в Енаим?

Они ответили:

– Здесь не было никакой храмовой блудницы.

So he went back to Judah and said, “I didn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, ‘There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here.’”

Он вернулся к Иуде и сказал:

– Я не нашёл её, и жители того места сказали: «Здесь нет никакой храмовой блудницы».

Then Judah said, “Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn’t find her.”

Иуда сказал:

– Пусть оставит себе то, что взяла, иначе мы станем посмешищем. Я ведь посылал ей козлёнка, но ты её не нашёл.

About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.”

Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”

Месяца три спустя Иуде сказали:

– Твоя невестка Фамарь впала в блуд и от этого забеременела.

Иуда сказал:

– Выведите её, и пусть она будет сожжена!

As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. “I am pregnant by the man who owns these,” she said. And she added, “See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are.”

Но когда её уводили, она послала к свёкру с такими словами:

– Я беременна от человека, которому принадлежат эти вещи.

Ещё она сказала:

– Посмотри, не узнаёшь, чьи это печать, шнур и посох?

Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not sleep with her again.

Иуда узнал их и сказал:

– Она правее, чем я, потому что я не отдал её за моего сына Шелу.

И он больше не ложился с ней.

When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.

Когда пришло ей время рожать, в утробе у неё оказались мальчики-близнецы.

As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, “This one came out first.”

Когда она уже рожала, один из них высунул руку; тогда женщина, принимавшая роды взяла алую нить, обвязала ему запястье и сказала:

– Этот вышел первым.

But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, “So this is how you have broken out!” And he was named Perez.^[a]

Но он втянул руку обратно, и вышел его брат; тогда она сказала:

– Как это ты прорвался?

И его назвали Фарец («прорыв»).

Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out. And he was named Zerah.^[b]

Затем вышел и тот, у которого на запястье была алая нить, и ему дали имя Зерах («алый свет зари»).
