Acts 17

When Paul and his companions had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.

As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,” he said.

Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.

Им удалось убедить как нескольких иудеев, так и многих из тех греков, которые чтили Аллаха, и немало знатных женщин. И все они присоединились к Паулу и Силе.

But other Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed a mob and started a riot in the city. They rushed to Jason’s house in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd.^[a]

Это возбудило зависть остальных иудеев, и они, взяв с собой негодных людей, которых нашли на базаре, собрали толпу и устроили в городе беспорядки. Они ринулись к дому Ясона, ища Паула и Силу, чтобы вывести их к толпе.

But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some other believers before the city officials, shouting: “These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here,

Не найдя их там, они потащили Ясона и других братьев к городским властям.

– Эти люди устраивают беспорядки по всему миру, а сейчас пришли и сюда, – кричала толпа, –

and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus.”

When they heard this, the crowd and the city officials were thrown into turmoil.

Толпа и городские власти, слыша это, встревожились.

Then they made Jason and the others post bond and let them go.

In Berea

Они взяли с Ясона и остальных залог и отпустили их.

As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.

Как только наступила ночь, братья отправили Паула и Силу в Берею. Прибыв туда, они пошли в молитвенный дом иудеев.

Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

Берейцы были людьми более открытыми, чем фессалоникийцы. Они с большим интересом восприняли сказанное Паулом и каждый день исследовали Писание, чтобы проверить, соответствует ли услышанное ими истине.

As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.

Многие из иудеев поверили, поверило также много знатных гречанок и немало греков.

But when the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea, some of them went there too, agitating the crowds and stirring them up.

Но когда отвергающие Ису иудеи в Фессалониках узнали о том, что Паул возвещает слово Аллаха в Берее, они пришли туда и стали подстрекать и возмущать народ.

The believers immediately sent Paul to the coast, but Silas and Timothy stayed at Berea.

Братья сразу же отправили Паула к морю, а Сила и Тиметей остались в городе.

Those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens and then left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.

In Athens

Провожатые Паула пришли с ним в Афины, а затем отправились обратно с повелением от Паула, чтобы Сила и Тиметей как можно скорее пришли к нему.

While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols.

So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there.

Он беседовал в молитвенном доме с иудеями и чтущими Аллаха греками. Каждый день он говорил и со случайными встречными на площади.

A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.

В беседу с ним вступали и некоторые философы, принадлежавшие к школам эпикурейцев и стоиков.^[a] Одни спрашивали:

– И что этот пустомеля хочет сказать?

Другие говорили:

– Он, кажется, проповедует чужеземных богов, – потому что Паул возвещал Радостную Весть об Исе и воскресении^[b].

Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting?

Паула привели на городской совет, Ареопаг^[c], и попросили:

– Расскажи нам, что это за новое учение, которое ты проповедуешь?

You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.”

Ты говоришь о чём-то странном, и нам хотелось бы знать, что всё это значит.

(All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.)

Наилучшим времяпрепровождением для афинян и живущих там иностранцев было говорить или слушать что-нибудь новое.

Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious.

И Паул, встав посреди Ареопага, сказал:

– Афиняне! Я по всему вижу, что вы очень религиозны.

For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.

Я ходил вокруг и внимательно осматривал ваши святыни. На одном из жертвенников было написано: НЕИЗВЕСТНОМУ БОГУ. Этого неизвестного Бога, Которого вы почитаете, даже не зная Кто Он Такой, я и возвещаю вам.

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.

Аллах, сотворивший мир и всё, что в нём, является Владыкой неба и земли. Он не живёт в храмах, построенных руками людей,

And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.

и не нуждается в том, чтобы люди служили Ему своими руками, как будто Ему чего-то не хватает, ведь Он Сам даёт всем людям жизнь, дыхание и всё остальное.

From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.

От одного человека Он произвёл всё человечество, чтобы люди заселили всю землю, на которой Он определил для всех время и место обитания.

God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.

И всё это Аллах сделал для того, чтобы люди искали Его, могли ощутить Его и найти Его, хотя Он и не далёк от каждого из нас.

‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’^[b] As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’^[c]

Ведь «в Нём мы живём, движемся и существуем»^[d], как об этом говорили и некоторые из ваших поэтов: «Ведь мы и есть Его род»^[e].

“Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill.

И раз мы род Аллаха, то мы не должны представлять Его в виде золотого, серебряного или каменного истукана, или в виде какого-либо образа, сделанного по замыслу человека и умением его.

In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

Было время, когда Аллах принимал в расчёт людское невежество, но сейчас Он повелевает всем людям повсюду покаяться.

For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

Он назначил день, когда Он будет судить мир по справедливости^[f], и уже избрал Человека, Который и будет судьёй. Он подтвердил это перед всеми, воскресив Его из мёртвых!

When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.”

Когда они услышали о воскресении из мёртвых, то некоторые из них начали посмеиваться, другие же сказали:

– Об этом мы послушаем тебя в другой раз.

At that, Paul left the Council.

С этим Паул и покинул собрание.

Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.

Несколько человек, однако, присоединились к Паулу и уверовали. Среди них были Дионисий, член Ареопага, женщина по имени Дамарь и другие.
