2 Samuel 11

In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem.

One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful,

and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”

и Давуд послал разузнать о ней.

Посланный сказал:

– Это Вирсавия, дочь Элиама и жена хетта Урии.

Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (Now she was purifying herself from her monthly uncleanness.) Then she went back home.

Тогда Давуд послал людей, чтобы привести её. Она пришла к нему, и он лёг с ней. (Она только что очистилась от своей ежемесячной нечистоты.) Затем она вернулась домой.^[a]

The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”

Эта женщина забеременела и послала сказать Давуду:

– Я беременна.

So David sent this word to Joab: “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent him to David.

Тогда Давуд отправил Иоаву приказ:

– Пришли ко мне хетта Урию.

И Иоав послал его к Давуду.

When Uriah came to him, David asked him how Joab was, how the soldiers were and how the war was going.

Когда Урия пришёл к нему, Давуд расспросил его об Иоаве, о воинах и о ходе войны.

Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king was sent after him.

Затем Давуд сказал Урии:

– Ступай домой и отдохни.

И Урия вышел из царского дворца, а вслед за ним понесли царский подарок.

But Uriah slept at the entrance to the palace with all his master’s servants and did not go down to his house.

Но Урия лёг спать у входа во дворец со всеми слугами своего господина и не пошёл к себе домой.

David was told, “Uriah did not go home.” So he asked Uriah, “Haven’t you just come from a military campaign? Why didn’t you go home?”

Когда Давуду сказали: «Урия не пошёл домой», он спросил его:

– Разве ты не после дороги? Почему ты не пошёл домой?

Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tents,^[a] and my commander Joab and my lord’s men are camped in the open country. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and make love to my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!”

Урия ответил:

– Сундук соглашения, Исраил и Иудея находятся в шатрах, и мой господин Иоав, и все люди моего господина находятся в открытом поле. Как же я могу пойти домой, чтобы есть, пить и спать со своей женой? Верно, как и то, что ты жив, – я не сделаю подобного!

Then David said to him, “Stay here one more day, and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.

Тогда Давуд сказал ему:

– Оставайся здесь и сегодня, а завтра я отправлю тебя обратно.

И Урия оставался в Иерусалиме в тот день и на следующий день.

At David’s invitation, he ate and drank with him, and David made him drunk. But in the evening Uriah went out to sleep on his mat among his master’s servants; he did not go home.

По приглашению Давуда он ел и пил с ним, и Давуд напоил его допьяна. Но вечером Урия вышел, чтобы лечь спать на своей циновке, со слугами своего господина. Он не пошёл домой.

In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.

Поутру Давуд написал Иоаву письмо и отправил его с Урией.

In it he wrote, “Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die.”

В письме было сказано: «Поставьте Урию там, где будет самое яростное сражение, и отступите от него, чтобы он погиб».

So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were.

И когда Иоав осаждал город, он поставил Урию там, где, как он знал, были самые сильные защитники.

When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David’s army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died.

Когда горожане вышли из города и сразились с Иоавом, некоторые воины из войска Давуда пали, и хетт Урия тоже был убит.

Joab sent David a full account of the battle.

Иоав послал Давуду подробные известия о битве.

He instructed the messenger: “When you have finished giving the king this account of the battle,

Он научил вестника:

– Когда ты закончишь рассказывать царю эти известия о битве,

the king’s anger may flare up, and he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Didn’t you know they would shoot arrows from the wall?

царь может разгневаться и спросить тебя: «Зачем вы так близко подходили к городу сражаться? Разве вы не знали, что они станут стрелять со стены стрелами?

Who killed Abimelek son of Jerub-Besheth^[b]? Didn’t a woman drop an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?’ If he asks you this, then say to him, ‘Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.’”

Кто убил Ави-Малика, сына Гедеона^[b]? Разве не женщина бросила в него со стены обломок жёрнова, и он умер в Тевеце?^[c] Зачем вы так близко подходили к стене?» Если спросит у тебя это, скажи ему: «А ещё твой раб хетт Урия погиб».

The messenger set out, and when he arrived he told David everything Joab had sent him to say.

Вестник пустился в путь и, когда прибыл, передал Давуду всё, с чем послал его Иоав.

The messenger said to David, “The men overpowered us and came out against us in the open, but we drove them back to the entrance of the city gate.

Вестник сказал Давуду:

– Те люди наступали на нас, и вышли против нас в открытое поле, но мы отогнали их обратно к городским воротам.

Then the archers shot arrows at your servants from the wall, and some of the king’s men died. Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.”

Лучники стреляли в твоих рабов со стены, и некоторые из царских слуг погибли. Твой раб хетт Урия тоже погиб.

David told the messenger, “Say this to Joab: ‘Don’t let this upset you; the sword devours one as well as another. Press the attack against the city and destroy it.’ Say this to encourage Joab.”

Давуд сказал вестнику:

– Скажи Иоаву так: «Пусть это тебя не огорчает, меч поражает то одного, то другого. Соберись с силами против города и разрушь его». Скажи так, чтобы ободрить Иоава.

When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him.

Когда жена Урии услышала, что её муж погиб, она оплакивала его.

After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the Lord.

После того как время траура миновало, Давуд привёл её в свой дом, она стала его женой и родила ему сына. Но то, что сделал Давуд, не было угодно Вечному.
