Joshua 9

Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things—the kings in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites)—

Когда об этом услышали все цари к западу от Иордана – в нагорьях, в западных предгорьях и по всему побережью Средиземного моря^[a] до самого Ливана (цари хеттов, аморреев, хананеев, перизеев, иевусеев и хивеев),

they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.

они собрались вместе, чтобы воевать с Иешуа и Исраилом.

However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,

Но жители Гаваона, услышав о том, что Иешуа сделал с Иерихоном и Гаем,

they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded^[a] with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended.

прибегли к хитрости: они пошли, и собрали в дорогу еды, и нагрузили своих ослов ветхими мешками и ветхими бурдюками для вина, изорванными и заплатанными.

They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.

На ногах у них были поношенные и залатанные сандалии, их одежда также была очень ветхой. Весь хлеб, что они взяли с собой, был чёрствым и заплесневелым.

Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the Israelites, “We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us.”

Они пришли к Иешуа в гилгалский лагерь и сказали ему и исраильтянам:

– Мы пришли из далёкой страны. Заключите с нами союз.

The Israelites said to the Hivites, “But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty with you?”

Исраильтяне сказали хивеям:

– А вдруг вы живёте рядом с нами? Как же нам тогда заключать с вами союз?

“We are your servants,” they said to Joshua.

But Joshua asked, “Who are you and where do you come from?”

– Мы твои рабы, – сказали они Иешуа.

Но Иешуа спросил:

– Кто вы такие и откуда вы пришли?

They answered: “Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the Lord your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt,

Они ответили:

– Твои рабы пришли из очень далёкой страны, узнав о славе Вечного, твоего Бога. Мы слышали о Нём: обо всём, что Он сделал в Египте,

and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.

и обо всём, что Он сделал с двумя царями аморреев к востоку от Иордана – с Сигоном, царём Хешбона, и Огом, царём Башана, который правил в Аштароте.

And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, “We are your servants; make a treaty with us.”’

Наши старейшины и все жители нашей страны сказали нам: «Соберите в дорогу пищу, идите, встретьтесь с ними и скажите им: „Мы ваши рабы, заключите с нами союз“».

This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is.

Вот наш хлеб. Он был ещё тёплым, когда, отправляясь к вам, мы дома запасались им в дорогу. Но посмотрите теперь, как он зачерствел и заплесневел.

And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey.”

А эти бурдюки для вина, когда мы их наполняли, были новыми, но посмотрите, как они изорвались теперь. А наша одежда и сандалии совсем износились за долгую дорогу.

The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord.

Исраильтяне в знак мира взяли и ели из их припасов, но не спросили Вечного.

Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.

И Иешуа заключил с ними мир, охраняя их жизни договором, а вожди народа скрепили его клятвой.

Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them.

Спустя три дня после того, как они заключили союз с гаваонитянами, исраильтяне узнали, что это их соседи, живущие рядом.

So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.

Тогда исраильтяне отправились в путь и на третий день пришли к их городам – Гаваону, Кефире, Беэроту и Кириат-Иеариму.

But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel.

The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders,

Но исраильтяне не напали на них, потому что вожди народа поклялись им Вечным, Богом Исраила. Весь народ роптал против вождей,

but all the leaders answered, “We have given them our oath by the Lord, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now.

но они ответили:

– Мы поклялись им Вечным, Богом Исраила, и не можем теперь тронуть их.

This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that God’s wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.”

Вот что мы сделаем с ними: мы оставим их в живых, чтобы на нас не обрушился гнев за нарушение клятвы, которую мы им дали.

They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers in the service of the whole assembly.” So the leaders’ promise to them was kept.

И вожди народа продолжили:

– Пусть они живут, но будут дровосеками и водоносами для всего нашего общества.

Так обещание вождей не было нарушено.

Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you deceive us by saying, ‘We live a long way from you,’ while actually you live near us?

Иешуа призвал гаваонитян и сказал:

– Почему вы обманули нас, сказав: «Мы живём далеко от вас», тогда как вы живёте рядом с нами?

You are now under a curse: You will never be released from service as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”

Теперь вы прокляты. Вы всегда будете работать дровосеками и водоносами для дома моего Бога.^[b]

They answered Joshua, “Your servants were clearly told how the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.

Они ответили Иешуа:

– Твои рабы узнали наверняка, что Вечный, твой Бог, повелел Своему рабу Мусе отдать вам всю эту землю и истребить перед вами всех её жителей. Мы очень испугались за свою жизнь и потому поступили так.

We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.”

Теперь мы в твоих руках. Поступай с нами, как сочтёшь лучшим и справедливым.

So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them.

И Иешуа защитил их от исраильтян, и те не убили их.

That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the Lord at the place the Lord would choose. And that is what they are to this day.

В тот день он сделал гаваонитян дровосеками и водоносами для народа и для жертвенника Вечного на том месте, какое бы Вечный ни избирал. Они делают это и до сих пор.
