Job 4

“If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient?
    But who can keep from speaking?

– Если кто-нибудь решится сказать тебе слово,
    не досадит ли тебе?
    Впрочем, кто в силах удержать речь?

Think how you have instructed many,
    how you have strengthened feeble hands.

Вспомни о том, как ты наставлял многих
    и укреплял ослабевшие руки.

Your words have supported those who stumbled;
    you have strengthened faltering knees.

Твои слова были опорой падающим,
    и дрожащие колени ты укреплял.

But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged;
    it strikes you, and you are dismayed.

А теперь тебя постигли беды, и ты изнемог;
    тебя коснулись несчастья, и ты упал духом.

Should not your piety be your confidence
    and your blameless ways your hope?

Не в страхе ли перед Всевышним должна быть твоя уверенность,
    а надежда – в непорочности твоих путей?

“Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished?
    Where were the upright ever destroyed?

Подумай, случалось ли гибнуть праведнику?
    Были ли справедливые уничтожены?

As I have observed, those who plow evil
    and those who sow trouble reap it.

Я видел, что те, кто вспахивает неправду
    и сеет беду, их и пожинают.

At the breath of God they perish;
    at the blast of his anger they are no more.

От дуновения Всевышнего исчезают они
    и от дыхания Его гнева погибают.

The lions may roar and growl,
    yet the teeth of the great lions are broken.

Пусть львы рычат и ревут –
    сломаны будут зубы у свирепых львов.

The lion perishes for lack of prey,
    and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.

Гибнет лев без добычи,
    и разбежались детёныши львицы.^[a]

“A word was secretly brought to me,
    my ears caught a whisper of it.

Ко мне прокралось слово,
    но я уловил лишь отзвук его.

Amid disquieting dreams in the night,
    when deep sleep falls on people,

Среди беспокойных ночных видений,
    когда людьми владеет глубокий сон,

fear and trembling seized me
    and made all my bones shake.

меня объяли страх и трепет,
    и я задрожал всем телом.

A spirit glided past my face,
    and the hair on my body stood on end.

Дух овеял лицо моё,
    и волосы мои встали дыбом.

It stopped,
    but I could not tell what it was.
A form stood before my eyes,
    and I heard a hushed voice:

Он возник,
    но я не мог понять, кто это.
Некий облик явился моим глазам,
    и услышал я тихий голос:

‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God?
    Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker?

«Может ли смертный быть праведен перед Всевышним,
    может ли человек быть чист перед Создателем?

If God places no trust in his servants,
    if he charges his angels with error,

Если Всевышний не доверяет даже Своим слугам,
    если даже в ангелах находит недостатки,

how much more those who live in houses of clay,
    whose foundations are in the dust,
    who are crushed more readily than a moth!

то что говорить о живущих в домах из глины,
    чьё основание – прах,
    кого раздавить легче моли!

Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces;
    unnoticed, they perish forever.

Гибнут они между зарёй и сумерками;
    не заметишь, как они исчезнут.

Are not the cords of their tent pulled up,
    so that they die without wisdom?’
