Job 31

“I made a covenant with my eyes
    not to look lustfully at a young woman.

Договор заключил я с моими глазами,
    чтобы они не глядели с вожделением на девушку.

For what is our lot from God above,
    our heritage from the Almighty on high?

Ведь что за удел человеку от Бога свыше
    и что за наследие от Всемогущего с небес?

Is it not ruin for the wicked,
    disaster for those who do wrong?

Не беда ли суждена грешникам
    и гибель – творящим зло?

Does he not see my ways
    and count my every step?

Разве Он не видит мои пути
    и не считает каждый мой шаг?

“If I have walked with falsehood
    or my foot has hurried after deceit—

Ходил ли я во лжи,
    и спешили ли ноги мои к обману?

let God weigh me in honest scales
    and he will know that I am blameless—

Пусть Всевышний меня взвесит на верных весах,
    и тогда Он узнает, что я непорочен!

if my steps have turned from the path,
    if my heart has been led by my eyes,
    or if my hands have been defiled,

Если стопы мои от пути уклонялись,
    если сердце моё похотливо следовало за моими глазами,
    и руки мои осквернялись,

then may others eat what I have sown,
    and may my crops be uprooted.

то пусть другие съедят то, что я посеял,
    и исторгнется с корнем мой урожай.

“If my heart has been enticed by a woman,
    or if I have lurked at my neighbor’s door,

Если сердце моё соблазнялось женщиной,
    если я выжидал её у дверей ближнего,

then may my wife grind another man’s grain,
    and may other men sleep with her.

пусть жена моя мелет зерно другому,
    и чужие люди с ней спят.

For that would have been wicked,
    a sin to be judged.

Ведь это гнусное преступление,
    грех, подлежащий суду.

It is a fire that burns to Destruction^[a];
    it would have uprooted my harvest.

Ведь это палящий огонь, низводящий до царства смерти;
    он сжёг бы всё моё добро.

“If I have denied justice to any of my servants,
    whether male or female,
    when they had a grievance against me,

Если лишал я слугу или служанку справедливости,
    когда они были в тяжбе со мной,

what will I do when God confronts me?
    What will I answer when called to account?

то, что стал бы я делать,
    когда Всевышний восстанет на суд?
Что я сказал бы,
    будучи призван к ответу?

Did not he who made me in the womb make them?
    Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?

Разве не Тот, Кто создал меня в утробе, создал и их?
    Не один ли Творец во чреве нас сотворил?

“If I have denied the desires of the poor
    or let the eyes of the widow grow weary,

Если я бедным отказывал в просьбах
    и печалил глаза вдовы,

if I have kept my bread to myself,
    not sharing it with the fatherless—

если один я съедал свой хлеб,
    с сиротою им не делясь, –

but from my youth I reared them as a father would,
    and from my birth I guided the widow—

я с юности растил его, как отец,
    и всю жизнь заботился о вдове, –

if I have seen anyone perishing for lack of clothing,
    or the needy without garments,

если я видел гибнувшего нагим
    и нищего без одежды,

and their hearts did not bless me
    for warming them with the fleece from my sheep,

и сердце его не благословляло меня,
    за то, что согрел я его шерстью моих овец,

if I have raised my hand against the fatherless,
    knowing that I had influence in court,

если поднимал я руку на сироту,
    зная, что есть у меня влияние в суде,

then let my arm fall from the shoulder,
    let it be broken off at the joint.

то пусть рука моя отпадёт от плеча,
    пусть переломится в суставе.

For I dreaded destruction from God,
    and for fear of his splendor I could not do such things.

Я боялся бед от Всевышнего
    и, страшась Его величия,
    я не смог бы такого сделать.

“If I have put my trust in gold
    or said to pure gold, ‘You are my security,’

Если бы я на золото понадеялся
    и сказал бы сокровищу: «Ты опора моя»,

if I have rejoiced over my great wealth,
    the fortune my hands had gained,

если бы ликовал, что богатство моё несметно,
    что так много собрала моя рука,

if I have regarded the sun in its radiance
    or the moon moving in splendor,

если, глядя на солнце в его сиянии
    или на луну в её сверкающем шествии,

so that my heart was secretly enticed
    and my hand offered them a kiss of homage,

я втайне прельщался сердцем,
    и слал им воздушный поцелуй,

then these also would be sins to be judged,
    for I would have been unfaithful to God on high.

то и эти грехи подлежат суду,
    ведь так я предал бы Бога небесного.

“If I have rejoiced at my enemy’s misfortune
    or gloated over the trouble that came to him—

Если рад я был гибели моего врага,
    ликовал, когда он попадал в беду, –

I have not allowed my mouth to sin
    by invoking a curse against their life—

но я не давал согрешить устам,
    не призывал проклятия на его жизнь, –

if those of my household have never said,
    ‘Who has not been filled with Job’s meat?’—

если в шатре моём говорили:
    «Мы не насытились его угощением!» –

but no stranger had to spend the night in the street,
    for my door was always open to the traveler—

но и странник не ночевал на улице,
    ведь мои двери отворялись ему –

if I have concealed my sin as people do,^[b]
    by hiding my guilt in my heart

если я скрывал свой грех, как и другие^[a],
    в сердце своём прятал вину,

because I so feared the crowd
    and so dreaded the contempt of the clans
    that I kept silent and would not go outside—

из-за страха перед толпой,
    из-за боязни перед сородичами, –
    то я бы молчал и сидел взаперти.

(“Oh, that I had someone to hear me!
    I sign now my defense—let the Almighty answer me;
    let my accuser put his indictment in writing.

(О, если бы кто-нибудь меня выслушал!
    Вот подпись моя под тем, что я сказал.
Пусть Всемогущий ответит теперь;
    пусть мой обвинитель запишет своё обвинение.

Surely I would wear it on my shoulder,
    I would put it on like a crown.

О, я носил бы его на плече,
    надевал его, как венец!

I would give him an account of my every step;
    I would present it to him as to a ruler.)—

Каждый свой шаг я открыл бы Ему,
    и, как князь, приблизился бы к Нему.)

“if my land cries out against me
    and all its furrows are wet with tears,

Если взывала против меня земля,
    и рыдали её борозды вместе,

if I have devoured its yield without payment
    or broken the spirit of its tenants,

потому что я ел её плод, и не платил за него,
    и душу владельцев её изнурял,

then let briers come up instead of wheat
    and stinkweed instead of barley.”
