Job 22

“Can a man be of benefit to God?
    Can even a wise person benefit him?

– Может ли человек принести пользу Всевышнему?
    Даже самый разумный – может ли принести Ему пользу^[a]?

What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous?
    What would he gain if your ways were blameless?

Что за радость Всемогущему
    от твоей праведности?
Что за выгода Ему
    от твоей безгрешности?

“Is it for your piety that he rebukes you
    and brings charges against you?

За благочестие ли Он тебя осуждает
    и вступает с тобою в суд?

Is not your wickedness great?
    Are not your sins endless?

Должно быть, порочность твоя велика,
    и проступкам твоим нет конца.

You demanded security from your relatives for no reason;
    you stripped people of their clothing, leaving them naked.

Ты брал без причины с братьев залог,
    ты снимал одежду с полунагих.

You gave no water to the weary
    and you withheld food from the hungry,

Ты усталому не давал воды
    и отказывал в пище голодному,

though you were a powerful man, owning land—
    an honored man, living on it.

хотя ты был властным человеком и владел землёй,
    и знатный на ней селился.

And you sent widows away empty-handed
    and broke the strength of the fatherless.

Ты и вдов отсылал ни с чем,
    и сирот оставлял с пустыми руками.

That is why snares are all around you,
    why sudden peril terrifies you,

Потому и сети вокруг тебя,
    потому и внезапный ужас страшит,

why it is so dark you cannot see,
    and why a flood of water covers you.

потому и глаза тебе застилает тьма,
    и разлив многих вод тебя захлестнул.

“Is not God in the heights of heaven?
    And see how lofty are the highest stars!

Разве Всевышний не превыше небес?
    Взгляни на звёзды, как они высоки!

Yet you say, ‘What does God know?
    Does he judge through such darkness?

Но ты говоришь: «Что знает Всевышний?
    Разве может судить Он сквозь мглу?

Thick clouds veil him, so he does not see us
    as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.’

Сокрыт облаками, Он нас не видит,
    проходя по своду небес».

Will you keep to the old path
    that the wicked have trod?

Неужели ты держишься пути,
    по которому издревле шли беззаконники?

They were carried off before their time,
    their foundations washed away by a flood.

Они были до срока истреблены,
    их основания унёс поток.

They said to God, ‘Leave us alone!
    What can the Almighty do to us?’

Они говорили Всевышнему: «Оставь нас!
    Что может сделать нам Всемогущий?» –

Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things,
    so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.

а Он наполнял добром их дома.
    Итак, помыслы нечестивых мне отвратительны.

The righteous see their ruin and rejoice;
    the innocent mock them, saying,

Увидев их гибель, ликуют праведные;
    непорочные смеются над ними, говоря:

‘Surely our foes are destroyed,
    and fire devours their wealth.’

«Поистине, истреблён наш враг,
    и огонь пожирает его добро».

“Submit to God and be at peace with him;
    in this way prosperity will come to you.

Примирись же со Всевышним – и обретёшь мир;
    так придёт к тебе благополучие.

Accept instruction from his mouth
    and lay up his words in your heart.

Прими наставление Его уст
    и в сердце слова Его сохрани.

If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored:
    If you remove wickedness far from your tent

Если ты вернёшься к Всемогущему
    и удалишь неправду от своего шатра,
    то будешь восстановлен.

and assign your nuggets to the dust,
    your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines,

Если пылью сочтёшь ты золото,
    камнями речными – золото из Офира,

then the Almighty will be your gold,
    the choicest silver for you.

то Всемогущий станет твоим золотом,
    твоим серебром отменным.

Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty
    and will lift up your face to God.

Ты возликуешь о Всемогущем
    и поднимешь к Всевышнему свой взор.

You will pray to him, and he will hear you,
    and you will fulfill your vows.

Когда ты помолишься, Он услышит,
    и ты исполнишь свои обеты.

What you decide on will be done,
    and light will shine on your ways.

Как ты задумаешь, так и сбудется,
    и на пути твоём воссияет свет.

When people are brought low and you say, ‘Lift them up!’
    then he will save the downcast.

Если кто унижен будет, а ты скажешь: «Возвысь!» –
    то Всевышний спасёт павшего духом.

He will deliver even one who is not innocent,
    who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”
