Jeremiah 37

Zedekiah son of Josiah was made king of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin^[a] son of Jehoiakim.

Навуходоносор, царь Вавилона, поставил Цедекию, сына Иосии, царём Иудеи, и он правил вместо Иехонии, сына Иоакима.

Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention to the words the Lord had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.

Ни он, ни его слуги, ни народ страны не слушали слов Вечного, произнесённых через пророка Иеремию.

King Zedekiah, however, sent Jehukal son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: “Please pray to the Lord our God for us.”

Однако царь Цедекия послал Юхала, сына Шелемии, со священнослужителем Софонией, сыном Маасеи, к пророку Иеремии, чтобы сказать: «Прошу тебя, помолись о нас Вечному, нашему Богу».

Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.

Иеремия тогда ещё жил свободно среди народа, потому что ещё не был брошен в темницу.

Pharaoh’s army had marched out of Egypt, and when the Babylonians^[b] who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.

Войско фараона выступило из Египта, и вавилоняне, которые осаждали Иерусалим, услышав об этом, отступили из-под Иерусалима.

Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet:

И было к пророку Иеремии слово Вечного:

“This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of me, ‘Pharaoh’s army, which has marched out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.

– Так говорит Вечный, Бог Исраила: Скажи царю Иудеи, который послал спросить Меня: «Войско фараона, которое выступило тебе на помощь, вернётся в свою собственную землю, в Египет,

Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.’

а вавилоняне вернутся и нападут на этот город; они захватят его и сожгут».

“This is what the Lord says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, ‘The Babylonians will surely leave us.’ They will not!

Так говорит Вечный: Не обманывайте себя, думая, что вавилоняне непременно отойдут от вас. Они не отойдут.

Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian^[c] army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn this city down.”

Даже если бы вы одолели всё войско вавилонян, выступившее против вас, и только раненые остались бы у них в палатках, то и они вышли бы и сожгли этот город.

After the Babylonian army had withdrawn from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army,

После того как вавилонское войско отступило из-под Иерусалима из-за приближения войск фараона,

Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property among the people there.

Иеремия тронулся в путь из Иерусалима в землю Вениамина, чтобы получить свою долю имущества среди своих родственников.

But when he reached the Benjamin Gate, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, “You are deserting to the Babylonians!”

Когда он добрался до Вениаминовых ворот, начальник стражи по имени Ирия, сын Шелемии, сына Ханании, задержал его и сказал:

– Ты хочешь перебежать к вавилонянам!

“That’s not true!” Jeremiah said. “I am not deserting to the Babylonians.” But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.

– Неправда! – сказал Иеремия. – Я не собираюсь перебегать к вавилонянам.

Но Ирия не стал его слушать; он взял Иеремию под стражу и отвёл его к приближённым царя.

They were angry with Jeremiah and had him beaten and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.

Они разгневались на Иеремию и велели избить его и посадить под замок в доме писаря Ионафана, в котором они устроили темницу.

Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time.

Иеремию бросили в зиндан, где он провёл много дней.

Then King Zedekiah sent for him and had him brought to the palace, where he asked him privately, “Is there any word from the Lord?”

“Yes,” Jeremiah replied, “you will be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon.”

Потом царь Цедекия послал за ним. Пророка привели, и царь тайно расспрашивал его у себя во дворце:

– Есть ли какое слово от Вечного?

– Есть, – ответил Иеремия. – Ты будешь отдан в руки царя Вавилона.

Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “What crime have I committed against you or your attendants or this people, that you have put me in prison?

Иеремия сказал царю Цедекии:

– Какое преступление я совершил против тебя, твоих приближённых или этого народа, что вы бросили меня в темницу?

Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, ‘The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land’?

Где ваши пророки, которые пророчествовали вам: «Царь Вавилона не пойдёт против вас и против этой страны»?

But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there.”

Но сейчас, умоляю, выслушай, господин мой царь. Позволь обратиться с просьбой к тебе: не отсылай меня назад в дом писаря Ионафана, иначе я умру там.

King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

Царь Цедекия приказал заточить Иеремию в темницу при царском дворце и выдавать ему с улицы пекарей по лепёшке в день, пока в городе ещё был хлеб. Так Иеремия остался в царской темнице.
