1 Chronicles 19

In the course of time, Nahash king of the Ammonites died, and his son succeeded him as king.

David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.

When David’s envoys came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to express sympathy to him,

Давуд подумал: «Я окажу Хануну, сыну Нахаша, милость, потому что его отец оказал милость мне». И Давуд отправил к Хануну послов, чтобы выразить соболезнования о его отце.

Когда люди Давуда пришли к Хануну в землю аммонитян, чтобы сказать ему слова утешения,

the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven’t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?”

аммонитские вожди сказали Хануну:

– Неужели ты думаешь, что Давуд прислал к тебе этих людей с соболезнованиями из уважения к твоему отцу? Разве не затем они пришли к тебе, чтобы высмотреть, разведать и разрушить эту землю?

So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved them, cut off their garments at the buttocks, and sent them away.

И Ханун схватил людей Давуда, обрил их, обрезал их одежды наполовину, до ягодиц, и отослал их обратно.

When someone came and told David about the men, he sent messengers to meet them, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.”

Когда они ещё были в пути, об этих людях рассказали Давуду, и он послал им навстречу людей, потому что они были сильно опозорены.

Царь сказал:

– Оставайтесь в Иерихоне, пока не отрастут ваши бороды, а потом возвращайтесь.

When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents^[a] of silver to hire chariots and charioteers from Aram Naharaim,^[b] Aram Maakah and Zobah.

Когда аммонитяне поняли, что сделались ненавистными Давуду, Ханун и аммонитяне послали тридцать шесть тонн^[a] серебра, чтобы нанять колесницы и колесничих в Месопотамии^[b], в Сирийском царстве Маахе и в Цове.

They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and charioteers, as well as the king of Maakah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba, while the Ammonites were mustered from their towns and moved out for battle.

Они наняли тридцать две тысячи колесниц и колесничих, а также царя Маахи с его воинами, который пришёл, расположившись станом возле города Медевы. Аммонитяне собрались из своих городов и приготовились к сражению.

On hearing this, David sent Joab out with the entire army of fighting men.

Услышав об этом, Давуд послал Иоава со всем войском сразиться с ними.

The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance to their city, while the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country.

Аммонитяне вышли и расположились боевым порядком у входа в свой город, а пришедшие на помощь цари стояли отдельно в открытом поле.

Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans.

Когда Иоав увидел, что сражаться придётся и впереди, и сзади, он выбрал некоторых из лучших воинов Исраила и выстроил их против сирийцев.

He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai his brother, and they were deployed against the Ammonites.

Остальных людей он отдал под начало своего брата Авишая, и они выстроились против аммонитян.

Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to rescue me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will rescue you.

Иоав сказал:

– Если сирийцы станут одолевать меня, то ты придёшь мне на помощь, а если аммонитяне станут одолевать тебя, то я приду к тебе на помощь.

Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.”

Будь мужествен! Будем храбро сражаться за наш народ и города нашего Бога, и пусть Вечный сделает так, как Ему угодно!

Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him.

После этого Иоав со своими воинами вступил в сражение с сирийцами, и те побежали перед ним.

When the Ammonites realized that the Arameans were fleeing, they too fled before his brother Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab went back to Jerusalem.

Когда аммонитяне увидели, что сирийцы бегут, они тоже побежали от Авишая, брата Иоава, и отступили в город. А Иоав вернулся в Иерусалим.

After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they sent messengers and had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River, with Shophak the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.

Увидев, что они разбиты исраильтянами, сирийцы послали гонцов за сирийцами, жившими за рекой Евфратом, во главе которых был Шовах, начальник войска Ададезера.

When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel and crossed the Jordan; he advanced against them and formed his battle lines opposite them. David formed his lines to meet the Arameans in battle, and they fought against him.

Когда об этом доложили Давуду, он собрал весь Исраил и переправился через Иордан. Он пришёл к сирийцам и выстроил против них своих воинов. Когда Давуд атаковал сирийцев,

But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers. He also killed Shophak the commander of their army.

те побежали перед Исраилом, и Давуд перебил из них семь тысяч колесничих и сорок тысяч пеших воинов. Он убил и начальника их войска Шоваха.

When the vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him.

So the Arameans were not willing to help the Ammonites anymore.

Увидев, что они разбиты Исраилом, подданные Ададезера заключили с Давудом мир и покорились ему.

И сирийцы больше не хотели помогать аммонитянам.
