Genesis 28

So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. Then he commanded him: “Do not marry a Canaanite woman.

Alors Isaac appela Jacob, il le bénit et lui donna cet ordre : Tu n’épouseras pas une Cananéenne.

Go at once to Paddan Aram,^[a] to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.

Mets-toi en route, va à Paddân-Aram chez Betouel, ton grand-père maternel, et prends une femme de là-bas parmi les filles de ton oncle Laban.

May God Almighty^[b] bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples.

Le Dieu tout-puissant te bénira, il te donnera des enfants, il rendra tes descendants nombreux et tu deviendras l’ancêtre d’un grand nombre de peuples.

May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now reside as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.”

Il te transmettra la bénédiction d’Abraham à toi et à ta descendance, afin que tu hérites le pays dans lequel tu habites en immigrant et que Dieu a donné à Abraham^[a].

Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Jacob, envoyé par son père, partit donc pour Paddân-Aram, et il se rendit chez Laban, fils de Betouel l’Araméen, et frère de Rébecca, sa mère et celle d’Esaü.

Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite woman,”

Esaü vit qu’Isaac avait béni Jacob et qu’il l’avait envoyé à Paddân-Aram pour y trouver une épouse, et qu’en le bénissant il lui avait ordonné de ne pas épouser une fille du pays de Canaan,

and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram.

que Jacob avait obéi à son père et à sa mère et qu’il était parti pour Paddân-Aram.

Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac;

Il comprit alors que les filles de Canaan étaient mal vues de son père,

so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.

Jacob’s Dream at Bethel

Esaü se rendit chez Ismaël, fils d’Abraham, et épousa, en plus de ses autres femmes, sa fille Mahalath, la sœur de Nebayoth.

Béthel, « Maison de Dieu »

Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran.

Jacob avait quitté Beer-Sheva et marchait en direction de Harân^[b].

When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.

Comme le soleil se couchait, il prit une pierre pour s’en faire un oreiller et se coucha pour passer ainsi la nuit dans le lieu qu’il avait atteint.

He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

Dans son rêve, il vit une sorte d’escalier reposant sur la terre, et dont le haut atteignait le ciel. Et voici que des anges de Dieu montaient et descendaient cet escalier^[c].

There above it^[c] stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.

L’Eternel lui-même se tenait tout en haut et lui dit : Je suis l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Abraham ton ancêtre et le Dieu d’Isaac. Cette terre sur laquelle tu reposes, je te la donnerai, à toi et à ta descendance.

Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.^[d]

Elle sera aussi nombreuse que la poussière de la terre ; elle étendra son territoire dans toutes les directions : vers l’ouest et l’est, vers le nord et le sud. Par toi et par elle, toutes les familles de la terre seront bénies^[d].

I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

Et voici : je suis moi-même avec toi, je te garderai partout où tu iras ; et je te ferai revenir vers cette région ; je ne t’abandonnerai pas mais j’accomplirai ce que je t’ai promis.

When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”

Jacob s’éveilla et s’écria : Assurément, l’Eternel est en ce lieu, et moi je l’ignorais !

He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

Il fut saisi de crainte et ajouta : Ce lieu est redoutable ! Ce ne peut être que le sanctuaire de Dieu. C’est ici la porte du ciel.

Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it.

Le lendemain, de grand matin, il prit la pierre sur laquelle avait reposé sa tête, il la dressa en stèle et répandit de l’huile sur son sommet^[e].

He called that place Bethel,^[e] though the city used to be called Luz.

Il appela cet endroit Béthel (Maison de Dieu). Auparavant la localité s’appelait Louz.

Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear

Puis il fit le vœu suivant : Si Dieu est avec moi, s’il me protège au cours du voyage que je suis en train de faire, s’il me fournit de quoi manger et me vêtir,

so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord^[f] will be my God

et si je reviens sain et sauf chez mon père, alors l’Eternel sera mon Dieu.

and^[g] this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”

Cette pierre que j’ai dressée comme stèle deviendra un sanctuaire de Dieu et je t’offrirai le dixième de tous les biens que tu m’accorderas.
