1 Kings 3

Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married his daughter. He brought her to the City of David until he finished building his palace and the temple of the Lord, and the wall around Jerusalem.

Salomon s’allia par mariage avec le pharaon, roi d’Egypte^[a], en épousant sa fille. En attendant d’avoir fini de bâtir son palais, le temple de l’Eternel et le rempart autour de Jérusalem, il l’installa dans la Cité de David^[b].

Le peuple continue à sacrifier sur les hauts lieux

The people, however, were still sacrificing at the high places, because a temple had not yet been built for the Name of the Lord.

Seulement, en ce temps-là, le peuple continuait à offrir des sacrifices sur les hauts lieux car on n’avait pas encore construit le temple pour l’Eternel.

Solomon showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the instructions given him by his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.

Salomon aimait l’Eternel et se conformait aux instructions de son père David. Seulement, lui aussi offrait des sacrifices et des parfums sur les hauts lieux.

L’Eternel donne la sagesse à Salomon

The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

Un jour, le roi se rendit à Gabaon^[c], où se trouvait alors le haut lieu le plus important, pour offrir un sacrifice. Il fit immoler mille holocaustes sur cet autel.

At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”

Pendant la nuit, l’Eternel lui apparut là en songe et lui dit : Demande ce que tu désires que je t’accorde.

Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day.

Salomon répondit : Tu as témoigné une grande bienveillance à ton serviteur David mon père, parce qu’il vivait fidèlement selon ta volonté, de façon juste et avec un cœur droit. Tu lui as conservé cette grande bienveillance et tu lui as accordé un fils qui siège aujourd’hui sur son trône.

“Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties.

Maintenant, Eternel mon Dieu, c’est toi qui m’as fait régner, moi ton serviteur, à la place de mon père David, alors que je ne suis encore qu’un tout jeune homme^[d] et que je ne sais pas gouverner.

Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number.

Voilà ton serviteur au milieu de ton peuple que tu as toi-même choisi, un peuple nombreux qui ne peut être dénombré ni compté, tant il est nombreux.

So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

Veuille donc donner à ton serviteur l’intelligence nécessaire pour administrer la justice pour ton peuple, afin qu’il sache discerner entre le bien et le mal ! Sans cela, qui pourrait administrer la justice pour ton peuple qui est si nombreux ?

The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.

Cette demande de Salomon plut au Seigneur.

So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice,

Alors Dieu lui dit : Puisque c’est là ce que tu demandes, et que tu ne demandes pour toi ni longue vie, ni richesse, ni la mort de tes ennemis, mais l’intelligence nécessaire pour exercer la justice avec droiture,

I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.

eh bien, je vais réaliser ton souhait. Je te donnerai de la sagesse et de l’intelligence comme à personne dans le passé, ni dans l’avenir.

Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.

De plus, je t’accorde ce que tu n’as pas demandé : la richesse et la gloire, de sorte que pendant toute ta vie aucun roi ne t’égalera.

And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”

Enfin, si tu marches dans les chemins que j’ai prescrits, si tu obéis fidèlement à mes lois et mes commandements, comme ton père David, je t’accorderai aussi une longue vie.

Then Solomon awoke—and he realized it had been a dream.

He returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the Lord’s covenant and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then he gave a feast for all his court.

A Wise Ruling

Salomon s’éveilla, avec ce rêve présent à l’esprit, et il revint à Jérusalem. Là, il alla se présenter devant le coffre de l’alliance de l’Eternel. Il offrit des holocaustes, présenta des sacrifices de communion et donna un festin auquel il invita tous ses hauts fonctionnaires.

Salomon rend la justice avec sagesse

Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.

Un jour, deux femmes prostituées vinrent chez le roi et se présentèrent devant lui.

One of them said, “Pardon me, my lord. This woman and I live in the same house, and I had a baby while she was there with me.

L’une d’elles lui dit : S’il te plaît, mon seigneur, écoute-moi : cette femme et moi nous habitons dans la même maison et j’ai donné naissance à un fils près d’elle.

The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us.

Trois jours après, elle a aussi mis un enfant au monde. Nous vivons seules ensemble dans cette maison, il n’y a personne d’autre avec nous et nous n’étions que toutes les deux.

“During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him.

Or, pendant la nuit, elle s’est couchée sur son fils et l’a étouffé.

So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast.

Alors elle s’est levée au milieu de la nuit, elle a enlevé mon fils à mes côtés pendant que moi, je dormais, et l’a couché contre elle, puis elle a déposé son bébé mort près de moi.

The next morning, I got up to nurse my son—and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t the son I had borne.”

Le matin, je me suis levée pour allaiter mon enfant et j’ai trouvé l’enfant mort. Le jour venu, je l’ai examiné attentivement et j’ai reconnu que ce n’était pas mon fils que j’avais mis au monde.

The other woman said, “No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours.”

But the first one insisted, “No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine.” And so they argued before the king.

– C’est faux ! interrompit l’autre femme. C’est mon fils qui est vivant et le tien est mort !

– Pas du tout, riposta la première, c’est ton fils qui est mort et le mien qui est vivant !

Et elles continuèrent à se disputer ainsi devant le roi.

The king said, “This one says, ‘My son is alive and your son is dead,’ while that one says, ‘No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.’”

Celui-ci déclara finalement : L’une dit : « C’est ici mon fils qui est vivant ; et c’est le tien qui est mort. » Mais l’autre dit : « Pas du tout, c’est ton fils qui est mort et le mien qui est vivant. »

Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword for the king.

Eh bien, ajouta le roi, qu’on m’apporte une épée.

On lui apporta une épée.

He then gave an order: “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.”

Alors il dit : Coupez l’enfant vivant en deux et donnez-en une moitié à chacune.

The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved out of love for her son and said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!”

But the other said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!”

Alors la mère de l’enfant vivant, poussée par son amour pour son fils, s’écria : De grâce, mon seigneur, qu’on lui donne le bébé vivant, qu’on ne le fasse pas mourir !

Mais l’autre dit : Non, coupez-le en deux. Ainsi il ne sera ni à moi ni à elle.

Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother.”

Alors le roi prononça son jugement et dit : Ne tuez pas l’enfant ! Donnez-le à la première des deux femmes. C’est elle sa vraie mère.

When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice.

Tout Israël apprit le jugement que le roi avait prononcé et tous furent remplis de crainte à son égard, car ils comprirent qu’il avait reçu la sagesse de Dieu pour rendre la justice.
