Genesis 35

Verse 1
Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and [a]live there, and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled [b]from your brother Esau.”
And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.

Verse 2
So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods which are among you, and purify yourselves and change your garments;
Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:

Verse 3
and let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me [c]wherever I have gone.”
And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.

Verse 4
So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which [d]they had and the rings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the [e]oak which was near Shechem.

And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

Verse 5
As they journeyed, there was [f]a great terror upon the cities which were around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.
And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

Verse 6
So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him.
So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him.

Verse 7
He built an altar there, and called the place [g]El-bethel, because there God had revealed Himself to him when he fled [h]from his brother.
And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbethel: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

Verse 8
Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the oak; it was named [i]Allon-bacuth.

Jacob Is Named Israel

But Deborah, Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allonbachuth.

Verse 9
Then God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-aram, and He blessed him.
And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him.

Verse 10
God said to him,

“Your name is Jacob;
[j]You shall no longer be called Jacob,
But Israel shall be your name.”

Thus He called [k]him Israel.

And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.

Verse 11
God also said to him,

“I am [l]God Almighty;
Be fruitful and multiply;
A nation and a company of nations shall [m]come from you,
And kings shall [n]come forth from [o]you.

And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;

Verse 12
“The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac,
I will give it to you,
And I will give the land to your [p]descendants after you.”

And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.

Verse 13
Then God went up from him in the place where He had spoken with him.
And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.

Verse 14
Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it.
And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.

Verse 15
So Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him, [q]Bethel.

And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel.

Verse 16
Then they journeyed from Bethel; and when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and she [r]suffered severe labor.
And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.

Verse 17
When she was in severe labor the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for now you have another son.”
And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.

Verse 18
It came about as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him [s]Ben-oni; but his father called him [t]Benjamin.
And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.

Verse 19
So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

Verse 20
Jacob set up a pillar over her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.
And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.

Verse 21
Then Israel journeyed on and pitched his tent beyond the [u]tower of [v]Eder.

And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.

Verse 22
It came about while Israel was dwelling in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it.

The Sons of Israel

Now there were twelve sons of Jacob—

And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

Verse 23
the sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, then Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun;
The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun:

Verse 24
the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin;
The sons of Rachel; Joseph, and Benjamin:

Verse 25
and the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maid: Dan and Naphtali;
And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali:

Verse 26
and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.

And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid: Gad, and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Padanaram.

Verse 27
Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre of Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.

And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

Verse 28
Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.
And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years.

Verse 29
Isaac breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, an old man [w]of ripe age; and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
