Verse 1
Now Abraham took another wife, [a]whose name was Keturah.
Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah.
Verse 2
She bore to him Zimran and Jokshan and Medan and Midian and Ishbak and Shuah.
And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.
Verse 3
Jokshan [b]became the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim.
And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.
Verse 4
The sons of Midian were Ephah and Epher and Hanoch and Abida and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah.
And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.
Verse 5
Now Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac;
And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac.
Verse 6
but to the sons of [c]his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east.
But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, eastward, unto the east country.
Verse 7
These are [d]all the years of Abraham’s life that he lived, one hundred and seventy-five years.
And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.
Verse 8
Abraham breathed his last and died in a [e]ripe old age, an old man and satisfied with life; and he was gathered to his people.
Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.
Verse 9
Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre,
And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;
Verse 10
the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried with Sarah his wife.
The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.
Verse 11
It came about after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac [f]lived by Beer-lahai-roi.
Descendants of Ishmael
And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahairoi.
Verse 12
Now these are the records of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maid, bore to Abraham;
Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bare unto Abraham:
Verse 13
and these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, [g]in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar and Adbeel and Mibsam
And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,
Verse 14
and Mishma and Dumah and Massa,
And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,
Verse 15
Hadad and Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah.
Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:
Verse 16
These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; twelve princes according to their [h]tribes.
These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations.
Verse 17
These are the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.
And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.
Verse 18
They [i]settled from Havilah to Shur which is [j]east of Egypt [k]as one goes toward Assyria; he [l]settled in defiance of all his [m]relatives.
Isaac’s Sons
And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.
Verse 19
Now these are the records of the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham [n]became the father of Isaac;
And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begat Isaac:
Verse 20
and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the [o]Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the [p]Aramean, to be his wife.
And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
Verse 21
Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord [q]answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived.
And Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren: and the Lord was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
Verse 22
But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is so, why then am I this way?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.
And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the Lord.
Verse 23
The Lord said to her,
“Two nations are in your womb;
And two peoples will be separated from your body;
And one people shall be stronger than the other;
And the older shall serve the younger.”
And the Lord said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
Verse 24
When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
Verse 25
Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau.
And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
Verse 26
Afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding on to Esau’s heel, so his name was called [r]Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them.
And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
Verse 27
When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a [s]peaceful man, [t]living in tents.
And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
Verse 28
Now Isaac loved Esau, because [u]he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Verse 29
When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was [v]famished;
And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
Verse 30
and Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me have a swallow of [w]that red stuff there, for I am [x]famished.” Therefore his name was called [y]Edom.
And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
Verse 31
But Jacob said, “[z]First sell me your birthright.”
And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
Verse 32
Esau said, “Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?”
And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
Verse 33
And Jacob said, “[aa]First swear to me”; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
Verse 34
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
