Mark 13
MSG — The Message Bible (MSG)
NLT — New Living Translation Bible (NLT)
Verse 1
As he walked away from the Temple, one of his disciples said, “Teacher, look at that stonework! Those buildings!”
As Jesus was leaving the Temple that day, one of his disciples said, “Teacher, look at these magnificent buildings! Look at the impressive stones in the walls.”
Verse 2
Jesus said, “You’re impressed by this grandiose architecture? There’s not a stone in the whole works that is not going to end up in a heap of rubble.”
Jesus replied, “Yes, look at these great buildings. But they will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!”
Verse 3
Later, as he was sitting on Mount Olives in full view of the Temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew got him off by himself and asked, “Tell us, when is this going to happen? What sign will we get that things are coming to a head?”
Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives across the valley from the Temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him privately and asked him,

“Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled?”
Verse 5
Jesus began, “Watch out for doomsday deceivers. Many leaders are going to show up with forged identities claiming, ‘I’m the One.’ They will deceive a lot of people. When you hear of wars and rumored wars, keep your head and don’t panic. This is routine history, and no sign of the end. Nation will fight nation and ruler fight ruler, over and over. Earthquakes will occur in various places. There will be famines. But these things are nothing compared to what’s coming.
Jesus replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you,
Verse 6

for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’[a] They will deceive many.
Verse 7
— not in MSG
And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately.
Verse 8
— not in MSG
Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world, as well as famines. But this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come.
Verse 9
“And watch out! They’re going to drag you into court. And then it will go from bad to worse, dog-eat-dog, everyone at your throat because you carry my name. You’re placed there as sentinels to truth. The Message has to be preached all across the world.
“When these things begin to happen, watch out! You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.[b]
Verse 11
“When they bring you, betrayed, into court, don’t worry about what you’ll say. When the time comes, say what’s on your heart—the Holy Spirit will make his witness in and through you.
But when you are arrested and stand trial, don’t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
Verse 12
“It’s going to be brother killing brother, father killing child, children killing parents. There’s no telling who will hate you because of me.
“Stay with it—that’s what is required. Stay with it to the end. You won’t be sorry; you’ll be saved.
Run for the Hills
“A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed.
Verse 13
— not in MSG
And everyone will hate you because you are my followers.[d] But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
Verse 14
“But be ready to run for it when you see the monster of desecration set up where it should never be. You who can read, make sure you understand what I’m talking about. If you’re living in Judea at the time, run for the hills; if you’re working in the yard, don’t go back to the house to get anything; if you’re out in the field, don’t go back to get your coat. Pregnant and nursing mothers will have it especially hard. Hope and pray this won’t happen in the middle of winter.
Verse 15
— not in MSG
A person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack.
Verse 16
— not in MSG
A person out in the field must not return even to get a coat.
Verse 17
— not in MSG
How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days.
Verse 18
— not in MSG
And pray that your flight will not be in winter.
Verse 19
“These are going to be hard days—nothing like it from the time God made the world right up to the present. And there’ll be nothing like it again. If he let the days of trouble run their course, nobody would make it. But because of God’s chosen people, those he personally chose, he has already intervened.
No One Knows the Day or Hour
For there will be greater anguish in those days than at any time since God created the world. And it will never be so great again.
Verse 20
— not in MSG
In fact, unless the Lord shortens that time of calamity, not a single person will survive. But for the sake of his chosen ones he has shortened those days.
Verse 21
“If anyone tries to flag you down, calling out, ‘Here’s the Messiah!’ or points, ‘There he is!’ don’t fall for it. Fake Messiahs and lying preachers are going to pop up everywhere. Their impressive credentials and dazzling performances will pull the wool over the eyes of even those who ought to know better. So watch out. I’ve given you fair warning.
“Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it.
Verse 22
— not in MSG
For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones.
Verse 23
— not in MSG
Watch out! I have warned you about this ahead of time!
Verse 24
“Following those hard times,
Sun will fade out,
moon cloud over,
Stars fall out of the sky,
cosmic powers tremble.
“At that time, after the anguish of those days,
the sun will be darkened,
the moon will give no light,

Verse 26
“And then they’ll see the Son of Man enter in grand style, his Arrival filling the sky—no one will miss it! He’ll dispatch the angels; they will pull in the chosen from the four winds, from pole to pole.
Verse 27
— not in MSG
And he will send out his angels to gather his chosen ones from all over the world[j]—from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven.
Verse 28
“Take a lesson from the fig tree. From the moment you notice its buds form, the merest hint of green, you know summer’s just around the corner. And so it is with you. When you see all these things, you know he is at the door. Don’t take this lightly. I’m not just saying this for some future generation, but for this one, too—these things will happen. Sky and earth will wear out; my words won’t wear out.
“Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near.
Verse 29
— not in MSG
In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that his return is very near, right at the door.
Verse 30
— not in MSG
I tell you the truth, this generation[k] will not pass from the scene before all these things take place.
Verse 31
— not in MSG
Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.
Verse 32
“But the exact day and hour? No one knows that, not even heaven’s angels, not even the Son. Only the Father. So keep a sharp lookout, for you don’t know the timetable. It’s like a man who takes a trip, leaving home and putting his servants in charge, each assigned a task, and commanding the gatekeeper to stand watch. So, stay at your post, watching. You have no idea when the homeowner is returning, whether evening, midnight, cockcrow, or morning. You don’t want him showing up unannounced, with you asleep on the job. I say it to you, and I’m saying it to all: Stay at your post. Keep watch.”
“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.
Verse 33
— not in MSG
And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert[l]!
Verse 34
— not in MSG
“The coming of the Son of Man can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. When he left home, he gave each of his slaves instructions about the work they were to do, and he told the gatekeeper to watch for his return.
Verse 35
— not in MSG
You, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know when the master of the household will return—in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak.
Verse 36
— not in MSG
Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning.
Verse 37
— not in MSG
I say to you what I say to everyone: Watch for him!”
