Verse 1
King Solomon was king over all [the people of] Israel.
So King Solomon ruled over all Israel.
Verse 2
These were his [chief] officials: Azariah the [a]son of Zadok was the high priest;
And these were his chief officials:
Azariah son of Zadok – the priest;
Verse 3
Elihoreph and Ahijah the sons of Shisha, were scribes; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder [of important events];
Elihoreph and Ahijah, sons of Shisha – secretaries;
Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud – recorder;
Verse 4
Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the army; Zadok and Abiathar were priests;
Benaiah son of Jehoiada – commander-in-chief;
Zadok and Abiathar – priests;
Verse 5
Azariah the son of Nathan was in charge of the deputies; Zabud the son of Nathan was priest and was the king’s friend [and trusted advisor];
Azariah son of Nathan – in charge of the district governors;
Zabud son of Nathan – a priest and advisor to the king;
Verse 6
Ahishar was in charge of the household (palace); and Adoniram the son of Abda was in charge of the forced labor.
Ahishar – palace administrator;
Adoniram son of Abda – in charge of forced labour.
Verse 7
Solomon had twelve deputies over all Israel, who [b]secured provisions for the king and his household; each man had to provide for a month in the year.
Solomon had twelve district governors over all Israel, who supplied provisions for the king and the royal household. Each one had to provide supplies for one month in the year.
Verse 8
These were their names: Ben-hur, in the hill country of [the tribe of] Ephraim;
These are their names:
Ben-Hur – in the hill country of Ephraim;
Verse 9
Ben-deker in Makaz and Shaalbim and Beth-shemesh and Elon-beth-hanan;
Ben-Deker – in Makaz, Shaalbim, Beth Shemesh and Elon Bethhanan;
Verse 10
Ben-hesed, in Arubboth (to him belonged Socoh and all the land of Hepher);
Ben-Hesed – in Arubboth (Sokoh and all the land of Hepher were his);
Verse 11
Ben-abinadab, in all the hills of Dor (Taphath, Solomon’s daughter, was his wife);
Ben-Abinadab – in Naphoth Dor (he was married to Taphath daughter of Solomon);
Verse 12
Baana the son of Ahilud, in Taanach, Megiddo, and all Beth-shean which is beside Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-meholah as far as beyond Jokmeam;
Baana son of Ahilud – in Taanach and Megiddo, and in all of Beth Shan next to Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth Shan to Abel Meholah across to Jokmeam;
Verse 13
Ben-geber, in Ramoth-gilead (the villages of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead belonged to him, also the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and bronze bars);
Ben-Geber – in Ramoth Gilead (the settlements of Jair son of Manasseh in Gilead were his, as well as the region of Argob in Bashan and its sixty large walled cities with bronze gate bars);
Verse 14
Ahinadab the son of Iddo, in Mahanaim;
Ahinadab son of Iddo – in Mahanaim;
Verse 15
Ahimaaz, in [the tribe of] Naphtali (he also married Basemath, Solomon’s daughter);
Ahimaaz – in Naphtali (he had married Basemath daughter of Solomon);
Verse 16
Baana the son of Hushai, in [the tribe of] Asher and Bealoth;
Baana son of Hushai – in Asher and in Aloth;
Verse 17
Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in [the tribe of] Issachar;
Jehoshaphat son of Paruah – in Issachar;
Verse 18
Shimei the son of Ela, in [the tribe of] Benjamin;
Shimei son of Ela – in Benjamin;
Verse 19
Geber the son of Uri, in the land of Gilead, the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan; and he was the only officer who was in the land.
Solomon’s Power, Wealth and Wisdom
Geber son of Uri – in Gilead (the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and the country of Og king of Bashan). He was the only governor over the district.
Solomon’s daily provisions
Verse 20
[The people of] Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand that is in abundance by the sea; they were eating and drinking and rejoicing.
The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the seashore; they ate, they drank and they were happy.
Verse 21
[c]Now Solomon reigned over all the kingdoms from the [Euphrates] River to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; they brought tribute (money) and served Solomon all the days of his life.
And Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the River Euphrates to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These countries brought tribute and were Solomon’s subjects all his life.
Verse 22
Solomon’s food [for the royal household] for one day was thirty [d]kors of finely milled flour, sixty kors of wheat flour,
Verse 23
ten fat oxen, twenty pasture-fed oxen, a hundred sheep not counting fallow deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened fowl.
ten head of stall-fed cattle, twenty of pasture-fed cattle and a hundred sheep and goats, as well as deer, gazelles, roebucks and choice fowl.
Verse 24
For he was ruling over everything west of the [Euphrates] River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kings west of the [Euphrates] River; and he had peace on all sides around him.
For he ruled over all the kingdoms west of the River Euphrates, from Tiphsah to Gaza, and had peace on all sides.
Verse 25
Judah and Israel lived in security, every man under his vine and fig tree [in peace and prosperity], from Dan [in the north] to Beersheba [in the south], during all the days of Solomon.
During Solomon’s lifetime Judah and Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, lived in safety, everyone under their own vine and under their own fig-tree.
Verse 26
Solomon also had [e]40,000 stalls of horses for his chariots, and 12,000 horsemen.
Verse 27
Those deputies provided food for King Solomon and for all [the staff] who came to King Solomon’s table, each in his month; they let nothing be lacking.
The district governors, each in his month, supplied provisions for King Solomon and all who came to the king’s table. They saw to it that nothing was lacking.
Verse 28
They also brought the barley and straw for the horses and swift steeds (warhorses, chargers) to the place where it was needed, each man according to his assignment.
They also brought to the proper place their quotas of barley and straw for the chariot horses and the other horses.
Solomon’s wisdom
Verse 29
Now God gave Solomon [exceptional] wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of mind, like the sand of the seashore.
God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.
Verse 30
Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the sons of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt.
Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt.
Verse 31
For he was wiser [f]than all [other] men, [wiser] than [g]Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. His fame was known in all the surrounding nations.
He was wiser than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite – wiser than Heman, Kalkol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations.
Verse 32
He also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005.
He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five.
Verse 33
He spoke of trees, from the cedar which is in Lebanon to the hyssop [vine] that grows on the wall; he spoke also of animals, of birds, of creeping things, and fish.
He spoke about plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also spoke about animals and birds, reptiles and fish.
Verse 34
People came from all the peoples (nations) to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom.
From all nations people came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom.[e]
