KJV — King James Version Bible (KJV)
Verse 1
Now some time later, the cupbearer (butler) and the baker for the king of Egypt offended their lord, Egypt’s king.
And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.
Verse 2
Pharaoh ([a]Sesostris II) was extremely angry with his two officials, the chief of the cupbearers and the chief of the bakers.
And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.
Verse 3
He put them in confinement in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined.
And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.
Verse 4
The captain of the guard put Joseph in charge of them, and he served them; and they continued to be in custody for some time.
And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they continued a season in ward.
Verse 5
Then the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, both dreamed a dream in the same night, each man with his [own significant] dream and each dream with its [personal] interpretation.
And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison.
Verse 6
When Joseph came to them in the morning and looked at them, [he saw that] they were sad and depressed.
And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were sad.
Verse 7
So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in confinement with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so down-hearted today?”
And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?
Verse 8
And they said to him, “We have [each] dreamed [distinct] dreams and there is no one to interpret them.” So Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell me [your dreams].”
And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.
Verse 9
So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “In my dream there was a grapevine in front of me;
And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;
Verse 10
and on the vine were three branches. Then as soon as it budded, its blossoms burst open, and its clusters produced ripe grapes [in rapid succession].
And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:
Verse 11
Now Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup; then I placed the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.”
And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.
Verse 12
Then Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it: the three branches represent three days;
And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days:
Verse 13
within three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head (present you in public) and restore you to your position; and you will [again] put Pharaoh’s cup into his hand just as [you did] when you were his cupbearer.
Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.
Verse 14
Only think of me when it goes well with you, and please show me kindness by mentioning me to Pharaoh and get me out of this house.
But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:
Verse 15
For in fact I was [b]taken (stolen) from the land of the Hebrews by [unlawful] force, and even here I have done nothing for which they should put me in the dungeon.”
For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.
Verse 16
When the chief baker saw that the interpretation [of the dream] was good, he said to Joseph, “I also dreamed, and [in my dream] there were three cake baskets on my head;
When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head:
Verse 17
and in the top basket there were some of all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds [of prey] were eating [these foods] out of the basket on my head.”
And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.
Verse 18
Joseph answered, “This is the interpretation of it: the three baskets represent three days;
And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days:
Verse 19
within three more days Pharaoh will [c]lift up your head and will hang you on a tree (gallows, pole), and [you will not so much as be given a burial, but] the birds will eat your flesh.”
Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.
Verse 20
Now on the third day, [which was] the Pharaoh’s birthday, he [released the two men from prison and] made a feast for all his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker [that is, presented them in public] among his servants.
And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.
Verse 21
He restored the chief cupbearer to his office, and the cupbearer [once again] put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand;
And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand:
Verse 22
but Pharaoh hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had interpreted [the meaning of the dreams] to them.
But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.
Verse 23
Yet [even after all that] the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot [all about] him.
Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.
