Exodus 22:8

If the thief is not caught, the owner of the house shall appear before the judges [who act in God’s name], to determine whether or not he had stolen his neighbor’s goods.

If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour's goods.

If the thief is not [f]caught, then the owner of the house shall [g]appear before [h]the judges, to determine whether he [i]laid his hands on his neighbor’s property.

I tilfælde af at en mand mister sine husdyr, sit tøj eller anden ejendom og påstår at have fundet det tabte hos en anden, der imidlertid nægter at have stjålet det, skal begge parter træde frem for Gud[c] og aflægge ed, for at det kan afgøres, hvem der er skyldig, og den skyldige skal så betale dobbelt så meget tilbage, som han tog.
